Battle of Port Arthur
by: Corey Elm
February 8th, marked the beginning of the Russo-Japanese war when Japanese soldiers ambushed Port Arthur by a squadron of Japanese destroyers on the Russian Fleet in Port Arthur, Manchuria. This continued throughout the night and surface combats continued the next morning. This caused the Russians to lose confidence in themselves and could have cost the war for them.
Battle of Mukden
The Battle of Mukden was considered to be one of the biggest land battles before world war 1. it was the last and most significant battle of the Russo-Japanese War. The battle lasted from February 20th till March 10th in 1905. This battle was fought in Mukden near Manchuria. The Russian forces had troops with numbers over 340,000 under General Alexei Nikolajevich Kuropatkin while the Japanese army had around 280,000 under Marshall Marquess Oyama Iwao.
This was the largest battle on Asian territory before world war II. 90,000 casualties of Russian soldiers died during that battle along with losing almost all their combat supplies while only 75,000 of Japanese soldiers died and they collected 58 artillery pieces.
After this, Russian retreated and later they were run out of southern Manchuria for good.
No more battles were fought after this and Japan victored over Russia and won the war.
